Description
The bluebird is a long-standing symbol of happiness, good health, and hope in North America. Native Americans showcased the bird in their art and told stories of its beauty and humility in their folklore. Bluebirds have a neat deep-bowl nest made of grass and straw, where a shy mother lays blue eggs and looks at the box from afar. From the first appearance of a carefully constructed nest to blind, bald, utterly helpless babies, to noisy, beautiful young chicks and abandoned, garbage-filled nests, watching the cycle of life has truly a revelation. Interesting facts: The eastern bluebird can see the insect 100 feet away! In autumn, flocks of up to 50 birds gather for the night to warm up. Bluebirds are among the first birds to return north in the spring. The eastern bluebird was named New York State bird in 1970. Taken in Needham, Massachusetts
