Description
The Northern Cardinal is a North American bird; it is also known as the redbird, common cardinal or just cardinal. The Northern Cardinal is a fairly large, long-tailed songbird with a short, very thick bill and a prominent crest. Females are pale brown overall with warm reddish tinges in the wings, tail, and crest. They have the same black face and red-orange bill like males.
The northern cardinal is a territorial song bird. Both sexes sing clear, whistled song patterns, which are repeated several times, then varied.
One of our most popular birds, the Northern Cardinal is the state bird of seven states, more than any other species: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. It was also a candidate to become the state bird of Delaware, but lost to the Delaware Blue Hen.
Captured in Cape Cod, Massachusetts
