Description
The meerkat or suricate is a small mongoose found in southern Africa. It is characterised by a broad head, large eyes, a pointed snout, long legs, a thin tapering tail and a brindled coat pattern. Meerkats have foreclaws adapted for digging and have the ability to thermoregulate to survive in their harsh, dry habitat. One of the safari’s smaller residents, these little meerkats live to be about 12-14 years.
This photo was taken at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park. Disney's Animal Kingdom is a zoological theme park at the Walt Disney World Resort in Bay Lake, Florida, near Orlando. It is the largest theme park in the world, covering 580 acres. Disney's Animal Kingdom is divided into seven themed areas. Africa is one of the original areas of the park. Guests can see meerkats hard at work on the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. Busy above the ground and burrowing just beneath the surface, meerkats make their home the same way at Disney's Animal Kingdom park as they do in the arid climates of Africa.
