Description
Monument to Sir George-Etienne Cartier is in a beautiful park setting at the foot of Mt. Royal. The base of the monument is a big terrace with broad steps leading up to the tall column. In the middle section of the column is Cartier, holding a document bearing the inscription "Let's All Be Canadian". Below, on either side of Cartier and placed at an angle, two statuary groups represent the four provinces that entered Confederation in 1867. Four corners of the terrace and the column are protected by perched lions. On top of the column is a winged female figure standing on a sphere and holding a wreath over Cartier’s head. Eclecticism reigns in this monument – considered the most imposing in Montréal – as dictated by the standards of late-nineteenth-century European commemorative sculpture. The impressive monument is a great tribute to Sir George-Étienne Cartier, a statesman and Father of Confederation.
