Description
Swans hatch up to 10 eggs at a time with the expectation of losing several of them. The female broods for around 36 days, with cygnets normally hatching between the months of May and July. Once the cygnets hatch, swan parents live with their young for six to nine months. The young swans do not achieve the ability to fly before about 120 to 150 days old. Interesting facts: the name 'mute' derives from it being less vocal than other swan species; swans are highly intelligent and sharp vision and impeccable hearing; a mute swan has 23 vertebrae more than any other bird. Taken at Charles River in Needham, Massachusetts.
