Description
It was the Gold Rush in 1848 that created the City of Sacramento. Old Sacramento is a historic eight-block section of Downtown.
These 28 acres on the Sacramento’s historic waterfront were the site of both tragedy — fire and flood — and triumph — the raising of the streets, the founding of the Transcontinental Railroad, the terminus of the Pony Express, and the home of California’s first thriving business district, fueled by gold, agriculture and the river.
The street level of Old Sacramento was raised in the 1860s and ’70s as much as 14 feet. You can still see the original level at some spots in the city, like the Pioneer Park and Pioneer Square. Sacramento was the first city on the West Coast and the only one in California to raise the street level. This created a city on top of a city. Some of the old relics, the red brick structures, dating back to the days of the California Gold Rush are still there. You can visit them in an Underground Tour.
