Description

Hummingbirds use perch as a base for hunting insects, as a resting place, as a place from which to guard feeders or flowers, and as a place to utter the voice of a male hummingbird. The extremely short legs of the Ruby-throated Hummingbird prevent it from walking or hopping. The best it can do is shuffle along a perch. Nevertheless, it scratches its head and neck by raising its foot up and over its wing. Taken in Dana Point, Southern California
