Description
Look for small shorebirds running back and forth in sync with the waves—these are likely to be Sanderlings. Sanderlings are medium-sized “peep” sandpipers recognizable by their pale nonbreeding plumage, black legs and bill, and obsessive wave-chasing habits. They feed on a wide variety of small creatures on the beach, mostly sand crabs and other invertebrates. The Sanderling is perhaps the most widespread shorebird in the world, found on every continent except Antarctica. Taken in Cape Cod, Massachusetts
