Description

The Turkey Vulture is common in Florida. They are relatively easy to identify, as they are all large dark birds with long, broad wings, with a bald red head and a pinkish bill. The name derives from their loose resemblance to a Wild Turkey. Turkey vultures have an extraordinary sense of smell. They have been known to be able to smell carrion from over a mile away, which is very unique in the bird world. The turkey vulture has the largest olfactory (smelling) system of all birds. Vultures help clean up the environment by eating the flesh of dead animals before it rots and causes disease.
