Description
Five Stamp Mill used to crush the ore into particles of sand, releasing the gold from the quartz. Each stamp weighs 1.000 lbs and drops 8 inches 100 times per minute for a total weight of 100.000 lbs per minute per stamp. The mill was in operation for many years at the golden key mine, in the Whitlock mining district, five miles north of this site. The mill is a gift of Marry Odgers & John Fulham of Mariposa county. It was moved to this site and restored by Harry Odgers in 1974. Taken in the Mariposa Museum & History Center, an award-winning small museum that presents an authentic picture of people and life in Mariposa, concentrating on the Gold Rush and late 19th century.
