Description
Mallards are thought to be the most common duck on the planet. They are beautiful and the ancestor of most other duck breeds. Mallards are most comfortable on the water. Their legs are set far back on their bodies, making swimming easier but walking on land clumsier. They are strong fliers. Females alone incubate the eggs and care for the young. Ducklings stay in the nest for at least 10 hours after hatching while they dry and get used to using their legs. The ducklings will stay with mom for up to two months before flying away to make their own way. Taken at Channing Pond, Dover, Massachusetts.
