Description
One of the most amazing phenomena in nature is happening right now in spring. American Goldfinches shed body feathers and transform from oft-ignored dull olive birds to the most showy brilliant sunny yellow beauties. The transformation is no less dramatic than the opening of a flower bud. Like so much else in nature, it comes down to sex. Female goldfinches are more likely to mate with males that have bright yellow back feathers and orange bills.
