The majority of modern windmills take the form of wind turbines used to generate electricity, or windpumps used to pump water.

The modern wind power industry began in 1979 with the serial production of wind turbines by Danish manufacturers. As the 21st century began, rising concerns over energy security, global warming, and eventual fossil fuel depletion led to an expansion of interest in all available forms of renewable energy.
