Description
Males and females are very different in colour. The male has a black back, pale grey flanks and belly and a white division between the black back and grey flanks. The shoulder is black with some irregular shaped white patches. The breast is light brown speckled with dark brown and not the red from which it gets it's name. The upper neck is white, sometimes speckled with black/green. The head is dark metallic green but looks black unless the light is good. It also has an unusual ragged crest on the top and back of the crown. The eye, beak and legs are all red. The beak is long and thin and has a serrated edge looking like backward pointing saw teeth which gives these birds and other similar birds the group name of 'sawbills'. As they are fish eaters this bill helps them to catch and hold onto their prey.
Interesting fact: the fastest duck ever recorded was a red-breasted merganser that attained a top airspeed of 100 mph while being pursued by an airplane.
Its breeding habitat is freshwater lakes and rivers across northern North America, Greenland, Europe, and Asia. It is migratory and many northern breeders winter in coastal waters further south. Captured on Charles River, Boston, Massachusetts.
