Description
Brilliant orange-and-black monarchs are among the most easily recognizable of the butterfly species that call the Americas home. Their migration takes them as far north as Canada and, during the winter months, as far south as Mexico City. A single monarch can travel hundreds to thousands of miles. The monarch migration is one of the greatest natural phenomena in the insect world. Monarchs are truly spectacular migrants because the butterflies know the correct direction to migrate, even though they have never made the journey before. They follow an internal "compass" that points them in the right direction each spring and fall. Monarchs were transported to the International Space Station and were bred there.
The monarch butterfly or simply monarch is a milkweed butterfly. Monarch butterflies communicate with scents and colors. The males attract females to mate by releasing chemicals from scent glands on the hind wings. Monarchs signal to other animals that they are poisonous by having bright orange wings. The bright colors serve as a warning that predators should attack at their own risk.
Monarch butterflies can be found throughout the United States. This photo of monarch butterfly feeding on Butterfly Bush was taken in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Buddleia or Butterfly Bush has been a sensation in American gardens for years, and no wonder. This a shrub-like plant is easy to grow, blooms profusely, and has that magical quality: butterflies can’t resist it. Buddleias attract other insects too, like moths, and the reddish ones strongly attract hummingbirds. So it’s more than a name; it’s actually a botanical phenomenon.
