Description
I think this picture shows a Callippe Fritillary butterfly. Fritillary butterflies account for approximately one quarter of Wyoming’s Brush Footed butterfly species. The common name comes from a Latin word, fritillus, which means chessboard or dice box. There are fourteen species of the so-called greater fritillaries and sixteen lesser fritillaries. Like many other butterflies, their caterpillars are very selective about what they eat. They prefer violets. Without violets, there would be no fritillaries.
