Description
The Brant is similar in appearance to the Canada Goose, but smaller and darker. The Brant Goose is about 60 cm long. The adult has a black neck and head with a short, stubby bill. The under-tail is pure white, and the tail black and very short (the shortest of any goose). It has a small “necklace” or patch of white feathers, so soft in color it’s not noticeable from a distance. The birds tend to be timid and shy of humans, preferring to swim away when a person get’s too close.
Every spring, thousands of Atlantic Brants (Branta bernicla hrota), are migrating from the American East Coast to the Arctic for a demanding breeding season. Life is not easy in the high Arctic to raise a family, and the Atlantic brant seem to be on the edge of giving up. Their population is slowly declining.
