Description
Egyptian geese are remarkable for the dark ring around their eyes. The Egyptian Goose, as the name implies, is a native of Africa that is now a fairly common and permanent resident in Florida. The first documented sightings of this species in Martin County on Florida's southeast coast were in 1993-94. FWC says the bird's impact on native species is not known. The feds, however, say Egyptian geese may compete with native birds for food, territory and nesting sites. They're also know to damage crops. The Egyptian Goose is not actually a goose, but a shelduck: a cross between a duck and a goose. It has many characteristics of a duck, but also some external traits of a goose. Taken in Florida.
