Description
A weather vane, wind vane, or weathercock is an instrument for showing the direction of the wind. It is typically used as an architectural ornament to the highest point of a building. The word vane comes from the Old English word fana meaning "flag". Common motifs for weathervanes include cockerels, ships, arrows and horses.
There are weathervanes depicting North America’s indigenous peoples, their stories and the wildlife that was central to their way of life. Colonials, as they built their settlements, were the first to depict indelible and iconic images of American Indians on weathervanes.
